Week 3 Topics

Here are your topics for this week. Have fun!

Topic 1:
When I was little, my parents read to me all the time. Probably because of that, I love to read. My best memory involving reading, though, has to do with my grandmother, not my parents. When I went to spend time with her, she took me to the library and let me take out as many books as I wanted. I would go back to her house with a stack of books more than a foot high, and then spend the rest of my visit with my nose in a book. Heaven! For this entry, write about your favorite memory related to reading. If you don't have a favorite memory, write about your earliest memory.

Topic 2:
Who's your favorite literary character? Why is s/he your favorite? Do any of the other literary elements play into what made this character your favorite?

  1. Topic 1: Well, I have several favorite memories of reading, in particular reading books assigned over the summer. One of the more memorable ones was during the summer before I began my sophomore year of high school. My literature teacher had our class read "I am the Cheese". For those who have read this book, I am sure that you understand its complexity!! However, the book interested me so, that I would read it while floating around in my pool! Now that is dedication! Haha... I really could not put the book down until I reached the ending. While I was reading in the pool, I would try to figure out the possible conclusions that the story could have...none of them however were correct!

  2. Topic 2: Goodness! This is a HARD question to answer!! I mean...where do you begin?! Well, since I have to narrow it down to my *favorite* literary character, I would have to say Dorian Gray. I know that "The Picture of Dorian Gray" is not most feel-good book of the year, but it does present a very important value. Dorian Gray embodies the fact that vanity is NOT everything! Boastfulness and arrogance completely unseated the world as Dorian knew it. I think that this novel has a powerful standing behind it and the author's personification of Dorian's portrait is very effective.

  3. Topic 1: My favorite memory about reading was in 2nd grade. We could read books and then take test online called accelerated reader. The bigger the books, the more possible points you could achieve. At the end of the year, you could use your points to buy prizes. One book that I really remember reading was Robinson Cruisoe. It was my favorite book for many years. At the time it was the longest book I had attempted to read, and when I finished I loved it.

  4. Topic 2: My favorite Literary character would have to be Lord Voldemort in Harry Potter. I love the Harry Potter books as well as the movies. I like Harry alot in the books as well, but something about evil draws me in. There powers are unknown and mysterious which makes me very interested. Ive always liked the role of a villain better than the hero because there character traits are more unique and interesting.

  5. Topic 2:
My favorite literary character of all times is Cinderella. Cinderella is my favorite because I was told that story all the time when I was little and never got tired of it, as a matter of fact it was the story I always wanted my mother to tell me. My favorite part about the Cinderella story is when she lost her slipper and the Prince had to find the perfect girl that this slipper would fit. Irony is definitely a literary element used in the Cinderella story.

  6. Topic 1:
My favorite memory related to reading is very similar to Mrs. Whitaker's. When my cousin and I were younger we could stay at my grandmother's house during the summer. Every week we would make her drop us off at our county library while she would go to the grocery store or whatever she had to do that day. We would read as many books as we could while we waited on her to come back and pick us up then when she was there to get us we would check out enough books to last us until the next time we went back. My favorite books at the time, and the ones I always checked out were the Babysitter Club books.
