Week 4

Changing our focus:

Topic 1 - In V for Vendetta, several groups are persecuted by the new government. It is unfortunate that over and over again we see groups of people choose to marginalize certain people. Why do you think we persecute people who are different than we are?

Topic 2 - Whether we want to admit it or not, we are all prejudiced against certain groups of people. Is there a way to end this? In our lifetime? In the lifetime of our children? Please don't rely on the argument that it's just "human nature" to behave this way.

  1. Topic 1: As soon as I read this post I thought of Orwell's "1984". The book exemplified life under governement control. In response to this question, I feel that we persecute or judge others who are different than us mainly because "different is NOT normal". We accept or are more comfortable with what is familiar to us than that which is not. It is very tempting for us to cast out those who do not go with the flow. Another thought that comes to my mind is of a school of fish headed in one direction and then there one little fish that is swimming the opposite way. It is a simple picture, but says alot!

  2. Topic 2: Unfortunately, I see no end to people's prejudice towards others. Aside from human nature, personal convictions are a main root of prujudice. Many people hold their personal convictions near and dear to themselves; they are not going to sway in their mind set. Of course people can and do change their opinions on matters, however, pure reverence for something is hard to break. Furthermore, people instill such hard core convictions into their children. Some to such a degree that the children grow to exhibit the same views as their parents.

  3. Post 1 People do those types of thing for a number of reasons. One could be that they do not like them because they like think that they person is better then them. For others they do just to have something to laugh at through out their day. Usually its the odd man out that getting pick on.

  4. Post 2 I think their is a way in our life time to put and end to prejudice, but it really start with the people teaching their children at home and letting them know that it a bad thing to prejudice. As people my age and older have to learn that just beacuse its ok for one race to say a certain words does not make it ok for the other race both parties should learn how to better them selves from using low class words like that. Maybe some day we can move forward from prejudice, but it starts with the people who are around you.

  5. Topic 1. I believe people persecute others that are different because they want to flaw you to make themselves feel superior. Companies find other companies flaws to make them the better company. It happens all the time in situations such as advertising. Theres a car commercial about a car that is the exact same as the mini cooper but better and cheaper. Companies bash other companies and try to sell there product or have society see there way. Every company and even people want to be the best in the world and persuting makes them feel ahead of others.

  6. Topic 2. I believe people are prejudiced against certain types of groups based on how they were raised. Some kids are taught to be prejudice to a certain group and that could stick to that belief for the rest of their lives. Also, a situation could happen where one person could do something wrong to you. From then on out, you look at that entire related group differently just because of that one person and that one situation. My solution to this is to read the Bible, and also to get out and explore the world. By exploring the world, you can really see the magnificense of it. People who stay in and rot and listen to critics are the majority of people who are prejudiced.
